The Water Quality Group participated in the preparation of the New White Paper on zero pollution strategy for contaminants of emerging concern in the urban water cycle from Water Europe.

The group is proactively contributing to this this Action Plan, by provide recommendations for evidence-based policy development to address water pollution, and to identify knowledge gaps that hinder achieving a pollutant-free water environment.

WORLD MARITIME DAY | September 29th

Frontsh1p.PNG

Today is World Maritime Day and in line in this year theme “the need to support a green transition of the maritime sector into a sustainable future, while leaving no one behind” we highlight the project FRONTSH1P. The project, part of the European Green Deal, will apply a circular governance model and create circular regional clusters, which will involve a wide range of local, regional, and national stakeholders, both from the public and private sphere, towards regional decarbonisation and territorial regeneration.

The Water Quality Research Group contribution will be centred on the development of surface-enhanced Raman scattering-based sensors for the CO2 detection, which will be implemented in the circular systemic solution of Water & nutrients. A feat that will be proven during the project by their implementation in Polish region of Lódzkie and it will be then replicated in four other European regions: Campania (Italy), Stereá Elláda (Greece), Região do Norte (Portugal), and Friesland (the Netherlands).

AIHABs Project

Towards an Artificial Intelligence-Powered Forecast for Harmful Algal Blooms

Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) pose a serious risk to human health. the AIHABs project will develop an early warning forecasting system to predict the occurrence, spread and fate of cyanotoxins caused by HABs in inland and coastal waters, using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the latest innovations in mathematical modelling, nanosensors, and remote sensing.
